Alexander Parris papers, 1812-1816, 1839-1853.

Contains 68 letters written to Parris while he was Superintendent of Artificers, U.S.A., Sacketts Harbor, Plattsburgh, NY and five letters from a later period. Correspondents include Jonathan Richards, Obed Wright, Joseph Dunn, and William Forrest. Collection also has a single interleaved almanac with journal entries by Parris for 1839 and 12 interleaved almanacs kept by Parris' nephew, Nathaniel Smith of Pembroke, Mass., 1845-1853. The almanac used by Parris has Engineers Office Navy-Yard Charlestown on the end sheet and contains twenty-four entries. Although most entries are very short and concern the weather or simply noting his return from a trip, there is an entry about a trip to York Ledge to see if a beacon could be built on it. The bulk of the entries recorded by Nathaniel Smith concern weather reports and managing Parris' farm.
